Innaccurate Information
The Internet is a wonderful source of information and a great research tool, but it also contains a lot of misinformation – especially when it comes to Bed Bugs, Bed Bug Treatment and Detection Dogs.
Recent statements on the Internet (and in the media as well) about canine false alerts assert that if a Detection Dog alerts on the scent of bed bugs and no bed bugs are found, it was a false positive. This is actually not true. There is no perfect detection technology available however; research has shown that properly trained and certified detection dogs are 95% accurate in a double blind test as opposed to human, visual inspection which is only 35% to 40% accurate at best.
It is careless to assume that simply because one cannot see a bed bug, there are no bed bugs present and the canine alert was false.
This short video shows how the bed bugs nesting in this mattress and unseen, emerge once the heat is applied.
Examples
An example of this in action comes from two separate and independent Thermal treatment companies in different parts of the U.S.
In each case, a thorough visual inspection of the room was made prior to beginning treatment. The visual inspection took hours and included all furniture as well as electrical outlets and floor molding. Cameras were placed in the room to observe the treatment process. As the temperature of the room approached and exceeded 98.6 degrees F (body temperature), bed bugs began emerging from the mattresses and wall outlets and eventually were killed by the heat.
The fact that no bed bugs (or even the traditional signs of bed bugs) are seen is not an indication that the room is free of bed bugs.
A New Level of Detection Detection canines take bed bug detection to a whole new level of capability and accuracy. Dog Inspectors is able to detect and locate the presence of bed bugs long before traditional signs such as blood trails, spotting or cast skins are seen. In many cases, bed bugs are rarely seen until treatment begins. This tremendous advantage enables Pest Control Organizations to treat and eradicate much earlier before the problem develops into a major infestation saving you the consumer time, money and disruption.
